Milestone microwave synthesis systems - MicroSYNTH

The MicroSYNTH system, with its accompanying line of accessories, is the most innovative labstation available for organic synthesis. As the system was designed with input from hundreds of users in a broad range of industries and academia, the MicroSYNTH platform therefore addresses the specific needs of the organic chemist. The MicroSYNTH is the only system that offers homogeneous microwave heating throughout its entire multi-mode cavity. Users can process single or multiple samples simultaneously, and reactions can be scaled-up to larger volumes in the same platform. Precise reaction monitoring and control, with an intuitive, easy-to-use software interface, provides exacting reproducibility and complete documentation

Reaction homogeneity
In standard mono-mode microwave systems, the wavelength of the microwaves corresponds to the size of the oven chamber, and standing wave patterns are allowed to form. Microwaves must be focused through a wave guide on the reaction vial, meaning that only one vessel can be used. Furthermore, there are restrictions on the vessel volumes

The MicroSYNTH however offers scalability because of its multi-mode design. The microwave field is diffused homogeneously throughout the entire chamber by means of a mode stirrer. As a result, chemists can achieve uniform results in a wide range of vials or well plates, and can process multiple reactions simultaneously or explore larger reaction volumes

Applications

The Milestone advantage in microwave-enhanced organic synthesis resides in the ability to provide thorough and effortless scalability. The systems offer tools to work with an entire range of volumes in the synthetic process, from discovery, through parallel synthesis, to large scale. The MicroSYNTH system and its accessories are developed with safe scale-up in mind, thus offering the safest solution for a wide range of synthesis needs:

Parallel Synthesis
Only the MicroSYNTH, with its homogeneous microwave field, gives chemists the ability to perform true parallel synthesis. With Milestone's parallel rotors, up to 24 different reactions can be processed at the same time. The PRO-6 rotor is a 6-position module that is designed for safe reaction optimisation at elevated temperatures and pressures (up to 15 bar), using a single 12ml or 50ml glass or quartz reactor vessel. The innovative PRO 16./24 reactor vessel is Milestone's newest, most advanced, and safest reactor for high throughput purposes for 16 or 24 samples. The patented pressure release valve in each reactor will vent and reseal automatically when pressure inside the vessel reaches 20 bar. In addition, high pressure (up to 55 bar) and high volume (270ml) rotors and vessels are available

Scale-up normal pressure reactions
The NP (Normal Pressure) reactor allows chemists to perform synthetic organic reactions in a reflux mode inside the MicroSYNTH cavity. Ordinary laboratory glassware can be used, so any reactions currently performed with a hot plate, heating mantle, or steam bath can be immediately transferred to the microwave. Reflux in a microwave field allows the chemist to investigate the effects of microwaves on reaction rates and mechanisms. Because the reaction temperature is not elevated (as it would be in a closed-vessel format), any enhancement in reaction rate can be attributed to the effects of the microwave energy itself. Reflux glassware is available in a range of volumes from 50ml up to 4L, for small to larger scale reactions. Reflux reactions will enjoy all the benefits of the MicroSYNTH labstation, including temperature monitoring and control, homogeneous heating, variable speed magnetic stirring, advanced operator safety features, and even the ability to induce photochemical reactions with an electrodeless plasma lamp

Scale-up under pressure, large volume reactions
Large-volume reactors in a simple drum-shaped format are available in 500ml and 1L volumes, and offer the following benefits:

  • Reduced method development with easy method scalability using small scale temperature and pressure conditions
  • Flexibility to process either homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures
  • Precise control over conditions of temperature and pressure using the same sensors used for small-scale reactions
  • High-pressure valves allow access to the interior of the reactor allowing pressurisation of the system with inert gases
